Behind major scientific breakthroughs are people driven to solve problems that affect everyday life. In respiratory science, this means finding safer ways to understand how our lungs respond to the thousands of chemicals we breathe each day. For decades, testing relied on animal models, which often produced results that were less accurate, slower, and ethically challenging. Our researchers have closed that gap by developing advanced models that mimic how real human tissue behaves. These innovations are reshaping the future of product safety testing, giving companies clearer, faster answers without the need for animal testing. ImmuONE, a Herts spin‑out, is redefining safety testing through its pioneering 3D lung models. Pharmaceutical and consumer product companies are applying this technology to improve reliability and advance ethical innovation beyond animal testing. Effective land management is essential for food security, sustainable development, and climate resilience, yet the data behind it is often difficult to interpret. Techniques once used to study distant galaxies are now helping us translate vast amounts of information into clear, usable insights. By revealing new insights and possibilities, our research equips businesses, governments, and innovators with the precision, foresight, and confidence to tackle land‑related challenges and shape a more resilient future. Aspia Space, born from astrophysics research at Herts, applies galaxy‑mapping techniques to Earth. Its deep-learning AI, named ClearSky, removes cloud cover, delivering trusted land insights from local to national scale for farming, finance, and industry. Despite Hertfordshire’s pivotal role in global film and TV, its cinematic heritage is often overlooked and frequently mistaken for Hollywood. At its peak, five of the highest‑grossing films of the decade were made at Elstree. Our research captures the rich history of Hertfordshire’s film studios through interviews with filmmakers, both on and off screen. Preserving these stories is vital to understanding how British creativity and innovation have influenced generations of audiences worldwide. Supported by our students, local partners, and our Heritage Hub, we are creating a living archive and digitising historic studio sites to safeguard this cultural heritage for the future. Our Film Heritage expert, Howard Berry, leads The Elstree Project, where he has recorded interviews with icons such as Steven Spielberg, and captured behind‑the‑scenes stories from productions spanning Star Wars and Paddington to Indiana Jones, and EastEnders. We're building industry partnerships that create opportunities for students and connect them with leading organisations across the region and beyond. From sports and fashion to the creative industries, these collaborations enable students to work on live briefs, gain hands-on experience and see their ideas become reality. A standout example is our partnership with Watford FC, where fashion students worked with the club to design products for its official retail range. Through stadium visits, professional design reviews and presentations, they gained valuable insight into the commercial design process and what it takes to bring a product to market. Herts student Alice Anes (BA Hons Fashion and Fashion Business) won an industry pitch to design merchandise for Watford FC. Her winning design was sold in the club's official store, providing real commercial exposure and opening up further opportunities to develop her professional experience.

State-Space and Multivariable Control
Digital Control & System Identification
Nonlinear and Adaptive Control Systems
Process Control & Model Predictive Control
